Click! Learn! Make! – Part 7 Online Tutorials using Resin, Clay, Molds and Organics

Welcome to part 7 of our Click! Learn! Make! blog post series.

Over the past couple weeks we have been focusing on supporting the Nunn Design Master Catalogue with a series of Click! Learn! Make! blog posts. The Nunn Design Master Catalogue is designed to inspire our customers AND to educate them on how to do the various projects throughout the pages.

Here is how we designed the catalogue pages with your interaction in mind:

  • Download the online digital Master Catalogue
  • Throughout the catalogue, click on an image that you would like to learn more about. The catalogue will link you to the Nunn Design website where you will learn more. Maybe the project won’t be an exact match, but the technique will be very much like what you are seeing.

Here are the links to the other Click! Learn! Make! blog posts within this series:

Technique 1: Colorized Resin with a Transfer Sheet in an Open Back Bezel

This tutorial is in the hopper for 2019, but until then, we can provide you with some projects that are almost the exact same steps, but totally different results. It is amazing what a color change or bezel style will do to a piece of jewelry using the exact same technique.

Here is a tutorial that will get you on your way to creating this technique! Colorized Resin in an Open Back Bezel with Transfer Sheets

Here are the basic steps for those who want to get started before the full step-out tutorial is posted on the blog:

Technique 2: Texturized Resin in Open Hoops

Not only does this technique look amazing, it is a perfect use for excess resin. If you haven’t explored working with Nunn Design 2-Part Resin, you may not know that you need to mix a full cup of resin each time in order for the formula to properly have success in curing. For some users, this large amount of resin has the potential to harden in the cup prior to having enough time to use it all.

This technique is best used when the resin is becoming very thick, otherwise it will cure onto the rubber texturizing pad and flow out from under the Open Hoop. It is really a fun technique to explore! Texturized Resin in Open Frame Hoops Tutorial + Video

Technique 3: Using Excess Colorized Resin to Create Mosaics

Piggy-backing on the drama that arises from “resin will soon to harden in the cup,” this technique allows you to use every drop of resin prior to it turning to waste.

When curing resin is at the “soft cure” state, it is easy to bend, cut and punch. This allows for so many fun things to happen! Here are a couple ideas for you.

I wanted to include this piece of jewelry that Cheryl created. I just think it shows the potential of this technique better than any of the tutorials that I created.

Technique 4: Sculpted Resin

This technique looks so different from project to project! The tutorial that is up on the website makes this technique unrecognizable, and it was only due to some very small changes in the steps! Sculpted Relief Resin Mold within an Open Bezel.

Technique 5: Crystal Clay, Transfer Sheets, PearlEx Powders and Nunn Design Resin

What I love about this technique is that I can teach two people how to do this, and each piece will come out totally different. For people making artisan jewelry, this is ideal. When building your jewelry brand, you want to be unique!

Technique 6: Open Back Bezels with Organics

Embedding organics into resin is one of the most popular techniques that we are offering right now. As with any resin technique, there is a learning curve for understanding how to preserve organics to get the optimal results (ie: less bubbles!). To ensure that your dried and pressed flowers are ready for resin, please read A Beginners Guide to Drying and Preparing Organics for Creating Resin Jewelry. The preparation of drying and pressing of your flowers is a critical step for avoiding bubbles in your resin.

Here are a couple tutorials to get you started creating!

Technique 7: Glitter Roxs in Resin

Glitter Roxs are colorized glass flakes imported from Germany. They are ideal to embed in Nunn Design 2-Part Resin as well as Gel du Soleil, a resin that cures with ultra violet light. Here are a couple different tutorials to walk you through the steps of using this great quick, easy and colorful medium.

I know these are bitsy post earrings, but the process for using a tiny bezel is the same as a large bezel, an open back bezel or even a hoop.

Here is an example where I just used a few flakes on colorized resin.

Colorized Resin with Glitter Roxs Tutorial

For this tutorial, I added a little Crystal Clay in the base and then embedded the Glitter Roxs into the clay prior to pouring on Nunn Design Resin.

Stacking Rings with Crystal Clay, Glitter Roxs and Nunn Design 2-Part Resin

Glitter Roxs are ideal for using with Gel du Soleil. Because the glass in translucent, it is quick and easy to cure with the uv lamp. I like this druzy like stone look, but remember, these are shards of glass. You need to “buff” the cured pieces because the edges can be sharp.

Technique 8: Colorized Resin with PearlEx Powders and Organics

It was when I was playing around with the Hammered Bitsy Rings with Colorized Resin and PearlEx Powders, I became curious on how I could create this look with organics. It has taken some trial and error, but the tutorial is to come this year. Here is a basic outline for those who are ready to get going sans me:

  • Clean bezels
  • Mix Nunn Design 2-Part Resin
  • Colorize ½ of the mixed resin with Castin’ Craft Opaque Pigment-White
  • Drizzle colorized resin into bezel of the bezel. Fill bezel until almost ¾ full.
  • Pour a small amount of clear resin onto a plastic bag. Add a toothpick of PearlEx Powder the to clear resin and blend.
  • Swirl some of the mixed PearlEx Resin into the white resin that is inside of the bezel. I swirl the PearlEx resin mix only underneath or near where I was going to lay the organics into the resin.
  • When resin is slightly set-up, lay the organics into the resin. If the resin isn’t slightly set-up, the organics will sink to the bottom.
  • With the remaining clear resin, pour over the top. On the sides of the organics, I swirled some of the white together with the top coat of clear.
  • Let cure for 24 + hours.
  • Lightly sand with a very fine steel-wool.
