Taylor Swift was honored with the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year for her lead single, “Fate of Ophelia.” The chart-breaking single was from the album The Life of a Showgirl, released on October 3, 2025. Swift became the most-awarded artist in VMA history, reaching 33 Moon Person trophies. The silver astronaut statue symbolizes a creative pioneer planting their flag on a new frontier.
Behind every great album is a team of artisans. Taylor Swift chose her team well when she selected Swedish co-writers and co-producers Max Martin and Shellback. This powerful duo is no stranger to creating hits for the Billboard charts.
I love to track all things creative. The MTV Video Music Awards focus specifically on the visual and creative side of music, celebrating music videos, directors, and the visual storytelling of a song. All of these forms of creativity are powerful tools for helping the viewer have what Abraham Maslow describes as a transcendent experience.
Maslow explicitly stated that the fusion of multiple sensory arts, like moving imagery, color, rhythm, and poetry combined, acts as a massive accelerator for “Being-Cognition.” When a music video is perfectly executed, it doesn’t just entertain; it can completely swallow the viewer’s attention, suspend their ego’s self-consciousness, and trigger a peak or transcendent experience.
This is the power of art. Art and creativity aren’t just about beauty. They can be a form of religion for those who immerse themselves deeply in their power to transform themselves and others.
When Taylor Swift met with her producers, I imagine she followed a creative process very similar to the one we explored on our blog post about Jon Batiste. Her lyrics are about love and speak deeply to one’s soul.
Depending on the level of consciousness within the witness, one person may see a superstar pop singer, while another may experience the song through its symbolism, archetypes, or deeper meaning. We each interpret art from where we are.
For me, Taylor Swift and her brilliant team are the myth makers of a culture. I think of them as shamans who can live between states of consciousness, between heaven and earth. This song, for me, is about Love, the essence of life.
The video has an old Hollywood vibe, something I find appealing in a high-tech society tense with the threat from an AI culture. The lyrics incorporate the archetype of Ophelia, a character in William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Hamlet. Ophelia is widely recognized in literature and art as an archetype for the drowning, tragic maiden with shattered innocence. When a songwriter invokes Ophelia, they are tapping into many archetypal layers. An archetype is a universal, primordial pattern, image, or motif that repeats across human history, mythology, literature, and dreams, regardless of culture or time period.
To me, Taylor Swift and her co-writers are writing about her own experience of love and how it saved her from a life of madness and death. Love steps in and is a savior. It reverses the tragic cycle. She is pulled out of her tower of isolation, digs out of the grave of depression, and is rescued from the “fate of Ophelia.”
Regardless of what one thinks of Taylor Swift, she is one of the world’s most influential artists. I like to imagine she has the power to change consciousness by evoking the power of love through the creative flow state that songwriters tap into. This is the source of all life.
Countless hours and the work of many creatives went into creating this 33rd Moon Person award. A video that will remain in the archives of history for generations to come.
This is the power of art.
