I have invested my life’s energy into the vocation of inspiring and nurturing creativity. My calling came early, it wasn’t considered “normal,” but a calling it was.
The mission of Nunn Design is a personal expression of this vocation. Through collaborative relationships, Nunn Design inspires and nurtures creativity. This mission has been my true north. Collaborative relationships with like-minded people inspire and nurture my own creativity. I say, “like-minded people,” versus artists, because I believe we are all called to be co-creators of the world we want to live in.
Artists have a beautiful part to play in the collective culture of humanity. Jon Batiste, the Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe and eight-time Grammy award-winning musician, is a perfect example of this.
In an essay about authenticity, imagination, and breaking musical barriers, Jon wrote:
“When we allow forms to evolve, we find new frequencies. Throughout history, when people decided to go against the standard practice, to depart from the norm—whether in music or some other medium—it has led to an expansion or refinement or general improvement of the human condition. How many times has that happened? That’s pretty much the whole history of any positive evolution in creativity and culture: somebody takes what has come before, and while respecting it, while revering it, they bring it into the present to create the future.”
I first discovered the beauty of Jon’s life through a podcast interview with Tim Ferriss in October of 2024. Since then, I have been a great admirer of Jon and his wife Suleika Jaouad. Both, by my definition, are living the essence of what it means to be a co-creator of positive evolution through creativity.
As an entrepreneur and product developer, I have built my own creative process. It has come from years of truly knowing myself, and all the games I play when it comes to getting into the creative flow state. It was a delight to see and experience the process of Jon Batiste as he documented his journey of creating the song Big Money..
“…with all of my years of lived experience, craft and study, how do I tap into the underlined truth of this age? What are we dealing with? What do we need to be dealing with? What do we run away from? What is the truth serum we don’t want to take? Wisdom is accumulated and so is pain. These are the biblical days of big money, prophetic unfolding, and new age culture. What can that sound like on record?”
In his 14-minute documentary, Big Money: A Spiritual Manifesto, Jon walks the viewer through his process of creating a new album. There is a lot to learn and glean from seeing how he works.
Once you finish his documentary, you must watch the music video. It is guaranteed to put a huge smile on your face as your foot starts tapping.
Ultimately, Jon’s work on this video shows us how he entered into his creative process to answer the query that started it all: “How do I tap into the underlining truth of our age?”
Please reply and tell me what you gleaned from watching Jon work, and how your own creative endeavors have led to a general improvement of the human condition?
As always, thank you for taking the time to read and reflect on your own creative life. Keep creating beauty. It is essential!
All my love-
Becky
