Why are there so many kinds of rocks? So many colors, forms, textures? Crystals and metals and pumice that floats on water, even white-hot liquid rocks. Do we humans specifically, or the earth in general, really need that many different kinds of rocks? I love that there are so many of course, but is the plethora of rock variety random, or is there a reason?
And why would something as beautiful as amethyst or opal or turquoise exist in the dark earth, unknown and unseen? Sometimes we find them of course, but how many rocks are there still hidden in the deep, dark places? What are they doing down there?
I love rocks. We all love rocks. We pick them up as soon as our toddler fingers can grasp them, we adorn ourselves with the prettiest ones, we build with them, we grind them into pigments to paint with.
Even though rocks are everywhere and there is so much we do know, about them, there is also so much we don’t know. I will never run out of curiosity about them.
