Lesson from Making a Paper Chain.

Last week was holiday spirit week at our local small town high school. Every day my fourteen year-old daughter, Isabella, emerged from her bedroom dressed in a random outfit that left my husband and I guessing.

Wednesday was “Crazy Cat Sock Day.” She left the house with four cat socks on her feet, and a pair on her hands, returning home with the first prize of, you guessed it, two more pairs of crazy cat socks!

Thursday’s theme was “Holiday Gift Wrap.” That morning she came out of her room declaring, “I can’t think of anything. I don’t have the time.”

I have always admired Isabella for fully participating, even at the risk of looking different or silly. When she announced that she was going to skip “Holiday Gift Wrap Day,” I couldn’t resist encouraging her to come up with something, even if it was simple.

“It doesn’t have to be complicated. What could we make super easily using wrapping paper? Maybe something you could wear? A hat? Scarf? What if we made a paper chain scarf? We can do this!”

I pulled out a roll of wrapping paper, scissors, and a stapler. We had twenty minutes before Isabella needed to be out the door.

We brought supplies to the kitchen table and made a prototype. With twelve minutes left, we recruited Isabella’s sister and dad. Both were eager to take part in the production phase, folding colorful paper, stapling it into a chain.

Moments later Isabella left for school, fully adorned with a scarf made from holiday giftwrap. I felt true joy.

Why was saying yes to creativity and encouraging my daughter to do the same so fulfilling? What is creativity? What is it that drives me to create?

These are the questions that I ask myself regularly, questions I often don’t have the answers to.

What I do know is that creating connects me with an important part of myself. It brings meaning to my life. My life feels empty without it.

My wish for all of us is that we find joy through creating. Not just this holiday season, but every day. Even if it is as simple as making a spirit week scarf out of holiday giftwrap.

Thank you for being on this creative journey with me.

Happy Holidays everyone!
Becky
