Understanding PayPal, the Payment Process and How It All Works

PayPal has become the payment choice of the internet for many valid reasons.

We have had emails from confused customers these past few weeks about how PayPal and the other payment methods actually work:

“I already paid for these, why are you requesting funds for my backorder?”

“I used PayPal because I thought I was paying for my order right then – what happened?”

“Why is there a hold on my account?”

“It looks like you have collected money twice, why?”

If you have found yourself asking any of these questions, know that you are not alone. Here is a basic run down of the Nunn Design Order Payment Process to help you understand how it all works:

Payment Process:

Once you fill your Nunn Design shopping cart and are ready to check out, you have two payment options – to use a Visa or MasterCard entered in our system, or use PayPal.

If you choose to use a Visa or MasterCard:

  • Your payment is AUTHORIZED*
  • Payment for your order is CAPTURED** the day your order ships.
  • If items are on backorder – the original payment method is used to pay for the backorder only if the payment method is saved*** by the customer. (see the Securely Save to Account button in the image above)

If you choose to use PayPal:

  • Your payment is AUTHORIZED* – order begins processing
  • Payment for your order is CAPTURED** the day your order ships using the original PayPal authorization
  • Any funds that are authorized but uncollected will be released back to the account that your PayPal is associated with after 30 days. So if you have a backordered item and it is longer than 30 days before we can ship the backorder, we will need to send a PayPal request for payment.

Terminology:

Now, this is a lot of terminology isn’t it? Here are some of the definitions for you about what these items actually mean:

*AUTHORIZED – A temporary authorization will appear on your card statement or PayPal account for the full price of the product and shipping. This pending authorization is to validate your form of payment and will fall off your statement once payment is captured after your order ships. (This varies from bank to bank.)

**CAPTURED – When the order is ready to ship the funds are captured by the system and deposited into the Nunn Design Account at the end of the day. This means the funds are removed from the authorization and any excess funds are released back to your account.

***Payment method saved – Enter a Visa or MasterCard into your online Nunn Design account and use that for your order. You have the option of saving that payment information for future use or using it as a one-time payment. If you opt to save the payment information, you can easily check out the next time you shop.

Flash Sales and PayPal

Where PayPal has become tricky for us, as of late, is with Flash Sale orders. If we don’t “capture” the payment, (that has been authorized when you placed your order), within 30 days – the authorization “times out.” This requires us to contact you again requesting the funding.

We do hope this has been helpful; however if you are still unclear, feel free to contact Cheryl (cheryl@nunndesign.com) and she’ll walk you through it.
